IWIPS 2011 Special Track & Workshop

Workshop by Google Inc. U.S.

Presenters: Asif Baki, Dr. George Zhang

ACCIDENTAL RESEARCHERS: HOW CLEVER IMPROVISATION CAN HELP YOU GO GLOBAL.

•  How can I understand user needs if I can't be there in person?

•  How can my small team work across languages and locations?

•  How can I give my product a global reach with a small, local team?

One of the challenges facing small teams is the difficulty of conducting research on the scale necessary to move ahead in a global market. Small teams frequently have significant resource limitations, which makes research in other languages and locations seem completely out of reach. Even in large companies like Google, these efforts can be daunting. How can we effectively compare the use of a product across different contexts? Even if we can agree upon evaluation metrics, how can we scale our small teams to meet the need of a multi-location, multi-language research agenda?

In this workshop, we'll discuss ways to meet these challenges through creative improvisation. We'll help you find ways to define metrics, identify proxies and to engage non-specialists in the task of gathering and interpreting data.

In this workshop, you will:

•  Meet and spend a day working with your colleagues

•  Hear real-world examples of how research can scale across language and location.

•  Design a large-scale research effort across multiple locations, languages and contexts.

•  Learn to train non-specialists to carry out basic research tasks as part of a team.

•  Find ways to transform multiple qualitative inputs into scalable, quantifiable metrics;

•  Carry out an interactive research project and share the results with the group.
