Title:

What is the Job of a Culture?

Author:

Hoft, N.

Abstract:

The status quo synthesizes ideologies—belief systems--which inform our thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and above all, our choices. A question that we will consider is: do these belief systems, which are embedded in culture, limit our growth as human beings, or do they support our evolution? Then we look at localization as supporting this function of maintaining the status quo through product interfaces: we adapt products for a better cultural fit in the target locale (localization) while simultaneously maintaining the source culture to varying degrees (internationalization)…. Localization, then, also affects the thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and above all, the choices of the people who use our products. Are we comfortable with this role of localization, or is there a more active, creative, evolutionary role that it could play? What are we adapting products to, for what reason, and is this truly growthful for the people affected?
