"The Digital Divide: What does it have to do with HCI and why should we care?"

Susan M. Dray

The Digital Divide confronts the world with a major social and economic development challenge. It cannot be solved solely thorugh economic means or merely by increasing the availability of technology. Bridging it requires "Real Access" which is the composite result of many factors. The HCI community has a pivotal role to play in creating "real access". In this keynote address, Dr. Dray will discuss the role of user-centered design in ensuring the success of technology initiatives aimed at addressing the Digital Divide. She will also survey some of the challenges facing HCI in the developing world and give examples of some projects that reflect a user-centered design philosophy.
