We understand from
colleagues in the US that you may be concerned about the 'foot and mouth disease'
in the farming industry in the UK.
The business community
in the South East of the country is virtually unaffected since the problems
are concentrated in rural areas many of hundreds of miles from this area. There
has been one suspected case in this area due to contact with animals in the
north. There have been no new cases anywhere near here and the disease appears
to have been contained in this area. Overall, the government now believes the
disease to have peaked.
The Food Standards
Agency has advised that although on very rare occasions humans in contact with
infected animals might get the disease which results in influenza type symptoms,
the disease has no implications for the human food chain and their have been
no human cases in the recent outbreak.
The stark pictures
of burning have not been seen in this area. However the national media talks
of little else in the same way that out news here was dominated by the USA election
issues in Florida at the beginning of this year. Ironically the downturn in
the tourist industry and a relatively low pound means there are some bargains
in terms of accommodation.
